What Our ESOS Lead Assessors learnt from ESOS phase one

Efficiency Direct have helped numerous UK companies achieve their ESOS phase 1 compliance, now, as we approach phase 2 of the Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme, we asked our Lead Assessors what lessons they had learnt from phase one that they will be taking with them into the second phase.

Preparation is Key

Many Organisations failed to meet the original deadline for phase one as the deadline seemed came around very quickly and many organisations weren’t prepared for it. Now with the experience under our belts, we can be better prepared for ESOS round 2.

The EA’s critique of ESOS phase 1 assessments highlighted that defining company/group organisational structures was one weak point. For phase 2 that will be a closely monitored facet so should be key to the preparation works.

In order to prepare for ESOS phase 2, we recommend acting sooner rather than later and adopt 1st January-31st December 2018 as your reference period. Although the Phase 2 deadline isn’t until 5th December 2019, organisations can start taking steps towards ESOS compliance now. This gives you 18 months to appoint the most suitable ESOS provider, undertake ESOS site surveys and collect the relevant energy and transport data.

Firstly, we would suggest it is important to know that you don’t have to use the same ESOS Lead Assessor for phase 2 as you did in ESOS phase 1. In fact, if you weren’t happy with your ESOS lead assessor for the first phase, we recommend shopping around to find a Lead assessor that suits your organisation’s ESOS requirements.

As soon as you’ve appointed your ESOS provider, liaise with your ESOS lead assessor to plan the site surveys and get them undertaken as soon as possible. If you have the site surveys completed this year, that just leaves the energy & transport data to be collected for next year.

Transport data is often the most time-consuming aspect of an ESOS assessment and in many cases transport has been the predominant energy usage.
