The Problem

The Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme is a European Directive introduced in 2014 and is mandatory for large UK organisations. We were approached to assist  an independent school in Steep, Hampshire to achieve ESOS compliance before the nationwide deadline. The  school is divided into the lower prep school and the main site and consists of classrooms, accommodation of boarding pupils, theatres, a library, a swimming pool and a gym. This ESOS assessment involved carrying out  energy site surveys at the school, as well as energy consumption analysis of the schools utilities usages including, electric, gas and any associated transport.

The solution

Efficiency Direct appointed a dedicated ESOS Lead Assessor who project managed the ESOS compliance from start to finish. We appointed a qualified Lead Assessor to attend the school to carry out an in-depth energy survey. Energy consumption analysis was carried out to assess the energy usage of the school and an ESOS report containing energy saving initiatives and recommendations was delivered. The ESOS  report identified 5 energy saving initiatives with estimated potential savings of 1,884,788kWh (£100,924) and an average payback of 0.4 years. As well as 4 additional uncalculated energy saving recommendations.

The outcome

The company achieved ESOS Phase 1 compliance by the deadline and lodged their compliance with the Environment Agency. Since then the school has decided to investigate implementing the energy saving recommendations.
