Ever since the introduction of Automate Meter Reading, or AMR, it has been possible to automatically collect utility consumption data without requiring manual meter reads.

However, despite the possibilities of AMR, a number of companies continue to undertake manual reads.

Below, we explore the pros and cons of AMR and meter reads:

AMR Pros
1.    AMR provides quick & easy consumption information.
2.    AMR meters collect accurate consumption information.
3.    AMR consumption data can be remotely accessed offsite.
4.    AMR collects half hourly data so that utility consumption can be monitored and analysed in high detail.
5.    Half-hourly data can be used for analysis and energy reporting.
6.    The AMR consumption data can be matched to the utility supplier invoice billing period so bill verification can be carried out.

AMR Cons
1.    Cost to install AMR/ logger.
2.    Cost of maintenance.
3.    Relying on technology.
4.    Need someone to be proactive to access data.

Manual Meter Read Pros
1.    Avoid relying on technology.

Manual Meter Read Cons
1.    Time-consuming activity.
2.    Labour intensive if have multiple meters/large site.
3.    Cost of paying someone to read the meters.
4.    Access to meters to read them.
5.    Accuracy of the meter read, human error.
6.    Usually carried out infrequently (monthly).
7.    Doesn’t usually match supplier invoice billing period.
